Hello, I have been reading on here regarding the use of Starter Fluid to humanely euthanize a chicken. I read that you use a rag soaked in the fluid and place the chicken in an airtight container with the soaked rag... Just so I do this right, are we talking about a standard size washcloth soaked in Starter Fluid? And a 5 gallon plastic paint bucket with a lid, would that work for the container?

Please advise and thank you!

Blessings,
TJ

let's not gang up here. she was asking for advice for a genuine problem. don't assume that she's lazy and cruel. when people are upset and worried, they are going to consider a lot of things.

remember, she specifically asked about a humane way? her intentions are good.

the more stress you heap on people who are already stressed out for innocently asking the "wrong" question, the LESS they're going to ask questions in the future. i don't think that's what anyone wants.

well, i know that's how i felt when my goat got attacked by dogs and i was freaking out and people were judging me. i thought it was very uncool and very self righteous. when you are freaked out, you are considering anything. maybe the right thing, maybe the wrong thing. but you know you have to do something regardless.

my goat today just has had her fever break from the injury. this is the first time the cloud has lifted from over my head for a couple weeks.

hang in there

I've only done it with young chicks, ducklings and kittens. I'm not sure how it would work with bigger animals. For the smaller animal I just soak a rag...usually like an old dish rag and put it in a gallon coffee with a tight fitting lid.

If you do this method, make sure you use ALOT of starter fluid for a 5 gal bucket. I personally prefer the removal of the head because they are in effect suffocating that way.

Thank you Katy! This is a 6 mo. old hen and she's pretty alert, I just don't want any mishaps...I've never done this type of thing before. My husband is off deer hunting and he complains when I ask him to do this...he shoots them in the head and he always says that it's a waste of a bullet. He thinks I should use another method...(*sigh*)

Thanks again...

At least your hubby will do it...Mine always says don't ask him to do anything I'm not willing to do myself.

I guess he's probably right...it's not something he likes doing either.

Thanks 'silkiechicken' but I couldn't do a hands on approach, I can't even imagine myself doing that...I know it's better for the hen but I wouldn't be able to sleep for days or probably weeks, and the nightmares! Ugh...

And 'antadeta', I had a dog attack happen last week and this hen was one who was injured. I can see where feathers were pulled out and she bled a bit but other than that I don't see any injury but she doesn't want to stand and she flops about if I put her on the ground. It's been a week and I think it's time to do something...(*sigh*)

Thanks all...
