Rooster protective over one hen

We have Barred Rock rooster that is typically ok around people. But the other night, my daughter was bent down to pet one of the chickens and the rooster flew up on her back. Then yesterday, I was around one of the chickens and he came at me, then my fiance told me last night when she was putting them back in the coop after we let them roam in the yard, that the rooster about had a fit when she put one of our golden comets back in. After thinking about it, that was the same chicken that my daughter was going to pet and the same one that I was walking toward. Is it typical for a rooster to be partial to one hen and be that protective?
