My hens have had this for a while now.... I think its scaly leg mites?

What's a good treatment?
  • Ivermectin injectable (orally or some drops on the back of their neck?)
  • Scarlex
  • Rubbing alcohol (on their feet)
I have a flock of 15 hens, so I really would like something other than the long process of soaking, scrubbing, and then rubbing in Vaseline on their legs, if possible!! :D

Thanks again!

Not an expert, but I don’t see any sign of scaly leg mites! I would put VetRX on their legs if you’re really concerned. They look healthy to me, I’m interested to see what others say!

Really?! The pics are of the hens which concerned me the most.

How come some of the hen’s and pullets legs turned that copper/red color, and get those red dots on their legs? If it’s not SLM?

Take it with a grain of salt - but I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary! The scales seem to be laying flat to me, if they were protruding up/outwards I would be concerned.
My chickens have different colored legs too, I think it’s just genetic. 😊 I feel like the “flaky” looking part (for lack of a better word) is just due to different layers of keratin, like fingernails. Chicken feet go through a lot on a daily basis, lol!

Thanks!
They have been flaking like that for a few months…. I wonder how long it takes for scaly leg mites to officially show? Because, their legs have been like that for a while.

Looks like normal chicken feet, to me. I'm admittedly not an expert, but my chickens' feet look like that. Once a month I put a good coating of vaseline all over their legs and feet (anywhere scaly) to moisturize and protect from scaly leg mites. You can also use vaseline on combs and wattles. It can protect from frostbite (not an issue for me), and suffocates any scaly leg mites. I figured I'd rather do this once a month to all the chickens than fight an infestation off once it starts. No mites so far.

A good idea to do it monthly. I’ll probably start doing that

Thanks!

Scaly Leg Mites have an entire life cycle of about two weeks, so I imagine it would be very clear by now if they had them.

Peace of mind is priceless though, if you feel you should treat them, I would definitely use VetRX or coconut oil… Even if they don’t have mites, it’s still moisturizing to their little feet and couldn’t hurt!

I forgot about those options for treatment... I bet I could find some coconut oil...
