I have to crack up every time one of our chickens takes a dirt bath. Mike found the dirt we used to fill a hole in our yard, and he wasn't sharing with anyone!

Since we move the chickens frequently, they have only grass. I was thinking we'd use one of those 4 inch high totes to put some dirt in for them. Anyone else have to "make" a dirt/dust bath?

Yes, tubs, and big kitty litter boxes will work too.

I mix sand, DE and ashes. (I have a lid to try to keep moisture out of the DE so it will remain effective, I've heard that once wet it looses its insect killing properties. )

Thanks...I know bathing is important to them but we don't want to have them in a permanent run. I'd planned using some plain ole yard dirt and sand, with some DE in it. I never thought of using ashes...makes sense though.
