I have pullets beginning to lay so I built these laying nests today. I hope the pullets like the nests.
I will move the laying box outside the fence later when I can modify the fence to allow the pullets to access the nests through the fence. This modification will allow my wife to collect the eggs without entering the run.

How has this set up, having the nest box out of the coop been working for you?

mine are all made by me and they work for 39 hens so I'm happy with them.

It has been working fine. And the hens don't mind the nests being outside.

Fantastic thread, I'm converting an old watertank stand to a coop, this has given me some great ideas! Will post some pictures once I decide what of the crap in the shed will be a nest

I'm still building my coop but here's my external nest boxes with sloping floors and false backs for roll-out eggs. I need to put astro turf or similar on the nest floors and pad the egg boxes underneath but I'm curious to see if it works!
