Our chicks are 4 weeks old (almost 5 weeks now!) and we brought them outside for the first time. We have a circle of chicken wire for them to hang out in for a few hours. We brought them out and they were so lost at first. Our rooster/cockerel told the other girls to steer clear because he's scared of everything.
After about 30 minutes, all the babies were eating grass and actually looking for bugs. Way far ahead of where our original flock was at that age. One even flew out of the enclosure to talk to one of our hens. They're so active and love to perch.
One curious note, our others are 8mths old. We have one hen who is starting to sit on the eggs and act a little broody. I thought that happened later like past a year. But she's not fully acting that way, just a few hrs. We pull eggs every day when we get home from work. But anyway.... She was the first interested girl there. And she literally was showing them how to forage. Hopefully she'll be a good momma when the time comes.
