I haven't judged, but I have seen a few junior poultry exhibits at fairs down south-ish. I too was a bit shocked at bird condition. One even looked sick. Several had frostbitten toes. I understand it's hard to avoid that in birds in this climate, I myself have several missing their toes, but showing them? Really? I'm not going to put a bird on display unless it's the best my flock has to offer and in top condition.Morning all.
Judged our local 4h poultry today. I was surprised at the dirty birds and lack of knowledge. Most kids couldn't tell me the breed or age of their bird. Has anyone else done poultry judging?
My kids will be showing next year and I'm disappointed in the competition. Looking forward to seeing what's at state.
Yeah. I could see their enthusiasm. They just haven't been given any direction or help. They were all amazed when I showed them how to properly hold a chicken and keep them calm. Poor birds were freaking out and escaping left and right. I'm thinking of holding a little demonstration for our clubs this fall. Show them some basics and talk about how to choose a healthy, nice looking bird. They seem eager to learn.I haven't judged, but I have seen a few junior poultry exhibits at fairs down south. The kids didn't seem all that knowledgeable either. They had MG and Marek's symptoms mixed up. I try to give them some slack; they are kids, after all.
No doubt some proper information will be much appreciated by them.Yeah. I could see their enthusiasm. They just haven't been given any direction or help.
