I've had horrible luck with sweet corn as well. Didn't even try this year.

I can grow it and it will form ears and then THE BUGS!!! This year it was ants! REALLY! ANTS! No worms just billions of ants. What do you do with the bugs? My father-in-law put so much seven dust on his corn last year I was afraid to eat it. What do you do about the bugs?

Had an awesome year with sweet corn. The irrigating drove me bonkers, however. There just wasn't any rain up here this summer. But, the heat sure drove the corn!!
Seed was from Gaylord Feed and Seed. Their "house special". Also a bi-color and everything the OP described.
