Are you talking bales of dry alfalfa and timothy?
Some of both of those would be fine.
Thing to remember is to use a variety of ingredients.
Different sizes, shapes, and materials.
Too much of any one thing could create a slimy anaerobic mess of toxicity.
Yes bales, my run is 23' x 15', but wouldn't go too heavy with the alfalfa and timothy, just a light layer, adding more when necessary. I was concerned that the new plant matter wouldn't dry properly if I went too deep, thanks for confirming that.

If it's dry you can add it deeper....fresh green stuff needs to be dealt out more sparingly.
Just kind gotta keep an eye on things, but usually the birds spread it all out pretty well.
