Angone k.ow much about them??

If anyone lives near Tn or KY I have a gorgous 6 month old male speckled sussex. He is better then any Ive seen in person.

Hi everyone! Here is the picture of my Light Sussex roo. My son wanted a roo, and he has been a great bird. He's a little rough on his lady friends, leaving most of them bare backed, but he's a good guy :) Can anyone tell me how you count the points on his comb. does the rear part count as a point, and does the little baby one in the front count??

The large part in the back is called the "Blade" it doesn't count. Nice comb. The small one in the front, I am not sure about. .
Best,
Karen

There's a reprint of the 1934 edition of Outram 's book. on Sussex sold by country books in NZ. Lots of good info on the buff as I remember. try http://www.abebooks.com and see if it comes up. I think thee is a copy for sale in the US to avoid shipping. Just put in Sussex for the title and Outram for the author. Also check http://www.archive.org to read Sharpe's the Sussex Fowl which is there on line for free. http://archive.org/details/cu31924003091398
It has info on Light, Red, Speckled and Brown Sussex in it. The book was written by a legend in the breed. Lots of classic info on the breed even if it doesn't cover your color variety. Brown and Buff are two different color varieties. Brown is more like a Wheaten coloring. Buff is a Buff version of the Light Sussex Columbian coloring. where the white parts are Buff instead of white.
Best,
Karen

Anyone on here have any older Cinnamon Sussex they could post pics of. I have some eggs in the incubator right now and can't to see how they turn out.
They are a very new color. I think they were just released to the public this year. They should be Colombian colored like the Light Sussex, only the black parts are Cinnamon brown colored. See Light Sussex and make a mental change n color. A Sussex is a Sussex is a Sussex regardless of color. Breed type is all important and defines the breed.
If it doesn't look like a Sussex in silhouette, and shape, , it's not a Sussex regardless of what other attributes it has. The best essay on Sussex I ever read was done by William White Broomhead. An august judge and poultry expert who later went on to become President of the British Poultry Club. His genius was making complicated topics simple for the reader. The 8 page essay can be found here. I re-read it often. http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924003137332 Published in 1921, it is timeless wisdom and may be applied to Sussex of any color variety.

Here's one of my most white Speckled Sussex pullets, whose 5 months old. I'd definitely be interested in getting hatching eggs in the spring to add genetic variety, since I'm working with 3 bloodlines at the moment. I'm debating whether I want to sell, cull, or keep her, though she is pretty. Its just my others aren't as "white" as her and one of her other sisters are. She is friendly and a good forager, I'm just not sure what to do with her. But glad to see this thread for SS's!

Hi,
If you like her breed type in silhouette and structure:
Go to: http://americansussexbreeders.webs.com/onlinelibrary.htm . Look for the article by Falkenstein titled. "The Proper Color of Speckled Sussex". It will explain how to color breed this girl. You need a dark male with proper undercolor. Undercolor is crucial with this tricolor variety. It is the most difficult of the Sussex colors to breed.

Thanks!

Yay Sussex thread!!! I incubated 6 eggs, two of which hatched, both cockerels, the one was smaller but more vicious and started pecking us so we killed him and ate him! The other now 17 weeks is the softest cockerel I know! He is a light sussex.

heres a pic of Geoff the 17 week old light sussex cockerel in our house!
