The Sussex thread!

How is Chizzy?
Beautiful, but a pistol as usual. She's a bit bossy so the other hens give her some space. My rooster won't even dare try to mate her. Chizzy likes the neighbor's yard (especially his compost area) and every day finds a new way to get over there. Thankfully the neighbor doesn't mind it, but if it keeps up, I bet she'll start laying her eggs over there too!

one of our Sussex babies, been trying to get help on what it's gender may be, looking like a ROO to me, but I'm no expert and we are new in this raising chickens, if it is a ROO, we are gonna be swapping him out with a hen from the buyer, just wish I knew now, we have another one but hard to get pics of he/she, but it is no where as big as this one, and barely has a comb showing, and they are both the same age, today maybe 5 weeks old, so I'm wondering is this Bella or Barry ? :D

My guess is he's a Barry.

Here was Chizzy when growing up. She had hardly any comb.

Point of lay question.
Forgive me if I'm not posting to the thread properly. I'm new here. I have two Coronation Sussex that are 25 weeks old. Their combs are red but not as big as I'd expect. Though their wattles are a good size. Would it be safe to assume though that they are close to laying their first eggs? I looked around for info on point of lay for the Sussex breed but turned up nothing yet. It is quite hot here in southern Illinois at around 90 and high humidity. I'm asking because I only have one laying hen so far and a trough nest box but am planning to divide it soon and wondering if I should do that asap. I must admit I'm a procrastinator and was expecting to see a new lady in the box before putting that in.

Sorry it took me a bit Dottie. Here are a couple of pictures. Both of my sussex ladies are from the same clutch and at the moment can't tell the difference between the two. I was only able to feel the pelvis on one and I would say it was close to two fingers. These photos are from three days ago, when I first asked.

I experienced something strange the night before last when one wouldn't settle down and go to roost. She stood for hours in the sand of the closed coop and pooped seemingly clear liquid in many locations. That was a worried night. My reference to books and calls to a friend didn't yield much info and by morning she was fine and on the roost. It wasn't hot that day and they hadn't eaten anything unusual so I wondered if it was related to laying. 3 days later, still no egg.
