The Sussex thread!

Hey everyone 👋 can I join you?

I have Sussex bantam eggs under my broody silkie.

I ordered 12 eggs from a dedicated Sussex bantam breeder here in the UK:

2 x buff
2 x coronation
2 x light
2 x red
2 x silver
2 x speckled

1 of the buff eggs got broken in the post, and the other wasn't fertile. 1 of the coronation wasnt fertile and 1 quit. So I've currently got nice healthy growing chicks in the following eggs:

2 x light
2 x red
2 x silver
2 x speckled

It is day 19 now and I am super excited.

Not doing too bad with 8/12 this far in. I rested them for 3 days after arrival and the air sacs settled nicely.

Please pray for pullets for me!

There was a lot of colour and size variation in the eggs, so that will be interesting if I get and keep some layers. I'm hoping for at least 1 pullet of each colour. They'll make such a pretty addition to my mixed bantam flock. I am building it for total variety. No chickens of the same colour at all.

Even though I'm obsessed with black and white chickens, I have no silver laced yet. May go for polish, sebright or wyandotte for this.

I'm gutted none of the coronation made it. Especially because we are celebrating the Queen's jubilee this week, it would have been very apt! And I would have called them Elizabeth and Jubilee, regardless of their sex 😂

Are your Sussex nice and friendly? I love a lap chicken!

Great variety of sussex eggs! I had a Coronation Sussex. She was a big gentle clam gal but didn't do well in the heat. She wasn't very bright and snuck into the garden. Her partner in crime found the way out but my poor coro hen got trapped as the morning shade disappeared.

My Speckled Sussex is just about the opposite. She's 7 and very "chatty" She loves to follow me around and see what I'm up to. A curious, problem-solver and tough old bird. Roosters never dare mate her and people better give her attention. If she feels ignored, she can pretty loud until acknowledged. She's not very polite because if she wants something, she'll just take it. My kids & their friends were having lunch outside. Scraps were thrown down, but Chizzy wanted a sandwich. She jumped into a girl's lap and started eating from the other end.

I have an OEGB pullet like this! She is so darn cute and teeny tiny I don't mind when she pecks my feet or hands demanding attention, food or a cuddle. Bold as brass, she is.

The Sussexes will be a great addition I think. Even though raised by a silkie they will get lots of handling. I bother them to distraction when I've got chicks!

Soooo, 8 baby bantams hatched today!!!!

I don't think I have two reds and two speckled, what do y'all think?

I see the silvers and lights, but I think one of the reds looks buff, and out of the so called speckled, only one is slightly chipmunk, the other is brown and grey.

What do you think of the two head spots on the slightly chipmunk one in the second pic in front of its mum there?
