*The Verge of War* A Medieval Rp

The sun was a distant glow of red-orange in the darkening sky now, and Alfric was no closer to Alnwick castle now than when he had set out for it two hours ago. He had dreamt away the time, and had completely forgotten where he was supposed to be. India stopped as they reached a clearing, here the trees thinned out, and tall green grass replaced the tall, thick trunks of the oaks. The blades swayed gently in the breeze, the green and yellow dispersed with pink and purple splashes of wild flowers. Alfric was struck with a sudden melancholy, an unexplainable sense of longing. India neighed softly and bowed her head to pull a mouthful of the sweet meadow grass into her mouth. She had walked without rest, without complaint. Both her and her rider were starved, and seeing India chewing made Alfric's stomach grumble. He held onto her neck and carefully spun himself to the side, lowering himself slowly to the ground. She was no small horse. Dusting himself down he surveyed his surroundings. The air here seemed clearer, fresher, than that of the castles. He inhaled deeply, filling his lungs to capasity with the icy, fragrance of the meadow.

Somewhere far off in the distance, the rushing water of a river reflected brightly the colours of the evening sky, and again, Alfric heard the howling of wolves. This time he paid them more attention, feeling slightly stripped of his power now standing on his own two feet. He ached terribly, and his throat was dry and sore, his face stinging and damp from sweat. He would never eat again if it were up to this godforsaken mask. Placing a gentle hand on India's neck, he affectionately rubbed her soft speckled fur. She turned to face him, peering into the dark cut-outs which hid his eyes, with large pools of black curiosity. Somewhere beneath the rigid and stern expression of the mask, a small smile spread across his face. He patted the side of her head and turned away to begin his journey towards the water. India followed close at his side.

Emilee trudged along the dirt path slowly with Daisy reluctantly in tow. Somewhere along this awful dusty path she had taken a wrong turn, the direction taking her further from the apple orchard. Anna had said it wasn't but three miles from the cottage but Emilee felt like she had walked at least three times that number.
Daisy, sensing something in the distance, twitched her furry little ears. She nickered softly then let out a long whinny, causing Emilee to startle. "What is it, girl?" Emilee asked, turning around. She examined the two baskets that hung on either side of the pony, checking the strap to make sure nothing was poking Daisy. Satisfied with her examination, she continued along, checking over her shoulder occasionally to make sure Daisy was okay.
Emilee fully regretted having agreed so quickly to this task. She should have kept her mouth shut and let Anna do it.

Alfric was close enough now that he could hear the rushing of the water, and could see the details of the small bridge which crossed it. He thought he saw something move just beyond it, and squinted his eyes to see, but it was too dark. India had begun to show her fatigue, and followed slowly behind him, her head hung low.

Gavin flipped up the hood on his stollen cloak and walked toward the gate with the most confidence he could muster. If he acted like he was supposed to be here, the guard hopefully wouldn't question him.
He kept his head low as he approached the gate. When the guard questioned him, he bluntly stated "The king has sent me to get more...apples" He knew that was probably a stupid excuse, but he hoped that the guard wouldn't be as suspicious of someone leaving the castle as someone entering.
"Very well" The guard nodded, opening the gate and letting Gavin exit.

A thought suddenly occurred to Katrina. 'The prince seems strangely concerned with that maid,' she thought. Sure, Alena was nice. Pretty, maybe. But she was a maid. And even though she had been found unconscious in the prince's room, which was extremely strange in itself, the prince seemed overly concerned with her current well being. Katrina thanked the cook and proceeded back to the prince's quarters, a tray with tea in hand. Then there was the boy. Tom hadn't seen him, and Tom always knew where everyone was. A second surprising thought now occurred. Had Alfric done it?
-------
Emilee whined and complained a full five minutes straight now. Poor Daisy bore it as any good beast of burden would: quietly and patiently. A scent wafted through the air. A scent much more interesting than this girl's complaints. A fellow equine? Daisy whinnied again after a second strong scent of it. Kicking up her little heels, she took off, straight through the brush in the direction of this intriguing smell. "Daisy! Come back here!" Emilee demanded. She picked up the basket of lunch that had fallen from Daisy's baskets and hurried after the ignorant pony.
--------
Anna hummed to herself as she poured a saucer of milk for her cats. Until Emilee had returned, these cats and Daisy were her closest company, except when Katrina came of course. Sadly, Katrina had been very busy of late at the castle and hadn't been allowed any visiting time in a long while.

(I missed something...who is this Tom guy?)

Gavin hadn't been walking very long before he started to wish he had borrowed a horse. He would have returned it later. But it was too late now.
He put one hand over his aching side and tried to ignoring the pain that not-so-subtly reminded him he should have waited a while longer before taking on such a hike.
