The Wyandotte Thread

My SLW (hatchery bird) also had me worried for a while as a chick until they were 4 or 5 months old. She didn't act differently than the others, but her comb was decidedly more pink (it was also a single comb). The green sheen doesn't mean boy, hens with black feathers can have an impressive amount of "beetle green" as it's called too. If you post pictures, people here can take an educated guess as to whether or not you have a boy.
I just checked some pictures out and it looks like the hens do a have little bit of green on their tails. Ok! Not worried anymore! Thanks everyone!

I thought you probably got yours from John. He purchased his BLRWs from my friend Kirstie. I think she said most of what she sold him was from Blue Poultry. I recently sold my gorgeous splash Greg Catt line rooster (replaced him with his son) and a splash Bill Braden hen to John. If you want to add some super nice lines to your flock you should see if he will sell you eggs from my Catt rooster.

It is hard to take pictures of the BLRWs that do them justice. Here are pictures of some of mine. Foley, Paul's Poultry, Gregg Catt lines.

I was looking at your pics again, your birds seem soooo blue. Is that the picture or do they stay real blue when they grow up? Mine start out real blue, it fades to almost white as they get older. I LOVE the Blue... :). Molly

I believe yours are splash? They get whiter with age but the blues stay blue.

We picked out our three new ones today, Columbian Wyandottes. I'm hoping we got two pullets and a cockerel. They're settled in their new home, exploring and scratching.

I think the one on the left is a boy, the other two are girls.

The boy:

The little girl? (this is the one who's gender I'm least sure about)

I believe the one on the right is a boy, the other two are pullets

I am new to wyandottes, so not sure about gender at all, but that last "pullet" has a straight comb it looks like. I think I read that some people use straight combs, but only if it is a pullet. Typically it should be avoided.

I can't wait so see what they grow into. I like the columbian pattern. One day I may have some.... if I am willing to part with something else.

Mine aren't pure to the standard, not show birds, but that's fine with us. Our two older girls, one has a single comb with four spikes; the other has a mossy feather pattern. One of these new ones also has a single comb.

What is important to us is that they have wonderful character, friendly and for the most part docile, and they are strong steady layers. Our older two are giving us 10 eggs a week.

Ok everyone, heres another question. My Blue wyanotte is really starting to grow her feathers back in ( about 4 months old) and but my SLW still doesnt have a tail! She looks like a araucauna! She has gotten more lacing but no tail. The feathers just curl over her bottom. Is this normal for a Wyandotte pullet?
