Trimming chickens toe nails

I don't really know. It's mainly our silkie that has that problem; we have a frizzle bantam who has a few nails that just grow in any direction.
We have a silkie and a frizzle bantam with both nails growing in all directions. They are about 10 months old, have both laid in the past, but have recently stopped. I've also noticed neither go very far from the coop when we let them free range. I just thought it was cause they are broody types.

Will trimming their nails a little bit at a time help?

I trim our chickens' nails if they get too long. Our bantams sometimes get curled nails and our rooster's one spur tends to grow into his leg. I just do it (carefully) with our goat hoof clippers. I just take off a little bit at a time and try to avoid hitting any veins. They don't like it either, so I have to hold them down to trim without hurting them.
I have a cochin bantam hen with really long curled nails, how should i do it?

What color are her nails? Are they light colored, can you see the quick through them if you look at them closely? The quick is the blood that runs into the nail itself partway.

I would trim them every day for as many days as it takes, doing just a little bit each day, to ensure you don't nick the quick. Likely if they're really long you can take a big chunk off at first, but don't go more than half the length that first time. Then do a bit every day until they're down to the correct size.

Oh my gosh, really, do I have to trim my chickens nails? I don't want to, but if its necessary I will. Why?

No, you don't. I've had birds 20 years and have never trimmed nails. I've also never washed a chick or chicken's butt or trimmed a beak. my birds wear their own nails down scratching in the run.
