As hard as it must have been, I'm glad you put the poor thing down. I was worried this was going to turn into one of those threads where someone tries to keep an animal alive that has no hope of living, and only manages to drag its suffering out.

For your hawk, I'd recommend a visible netting over the areas your chickens are in. If you can't keep them enclosed under netting, CDs hung to blow in the breeze can deter birds somewhat, they don't like the flashing lights in their eyes. It's nowhere near perfect, but it may help slightly. More cover is also good.
