I reached out to the Warren Twp (Township in Michigan, not Warren City) Zoning Administrator asking about Chickens in the township and received the following confirmation:
"You have to have 5 Acers to have farm animals so yes you can have chickens, if you plan on building anything you must get a zoning permit first"

I have more than 5 acres, and he confirmed it's ok to have chickens.

Perhaps he was thinking that I’m going to build a giant barn. I’m sure there’s some kind of size requirement for needing a permit.

Likely true. I live in UP and have a cabin in a pretty strict Twp. Was told that a 3-sided firewood crib needed permitting if it’s sitting on the ground So, when it came time to build an outdoor sauna we put it on an old trailer and declared it ‘mobile’. It’s got wheels, so what can they do? Nada!
Never mind the fact that the rims are bent and tires are flat.

Don't forget Michigan has the right to farm act... should override local ordinance.
