What size leg bands?

I have used zip ties. I switched to the colored plastic spiral leg bands. Below is the place I bought them. They have different types of leg bands.

I'm looking at these multi colored spiral type legs bands on ebay... they seem great but have no numbers and they seem too small to sharpie a number on them.

I am starting a breeding program and I've got 40+ birds that I am having trouble visually keeping track of now that numbers have grown. I want to number birds, keep track of lineage/ breed & age. I was hoping to number them for individual/ age documentation and then to use the colors for lineage & breed type.

Is it silly that I want to number my birds or is there better logic I could use here? How do you do your birds?

I have used the above spiral ones and they started to cut into my barred rock hen's leg I took it off..need something not so tight
