When is a pullet a laying hen at what age.

Vent the hole the egg comes out of (butt) and the more you handle you bird the friendlier they will be, you can even get them eating out of your hand

Picture where a saddle fits on a horse (across the back). That's where you'll find the saddle feathers on a chicken. A male chicken will have pointed saddle feathers that grow even longer and drape down the sides as the bird ages.
This picture of my rooster should help. See the long white feathers draped over his back? Those are the saddle feathers.

Keep in mind that my roo is older and his saddle feathers are pretty long.
