My coop!

Disclaimer: This article’s sole purpose is to show off my coop and hens, and give a few details. It is not a guide or a plan to build the coop.

After years of begging my dad to build my chickens a new coop it was finally finished last November! And…..here it is!

It looked more like this last year ⬆️
I’ve had to make a few modifications. The water bucket dry-rotted and had to be replaced. A chicken flew out and narrowly escaped the dogs so on went the netting! I also hung up the new signs and put on the automatic door (which no longer works). The run is Retriever brand dog kennel panels that are buried to prevent predators from digging in. Here’s the link for my review on the panels:

My dad started the coop by leveling the ground, and laying down 4 concrete blocks, which he put a sheet of plywood on. He made the walls about 10 feet high so I had him cut off a few feet (I said I wanted to be walk-in but that’s not what I meant!) He screwed on metal sheets at an angle to be the roof. For the door he glued pieces of wood together and screwed that onto the hinges. Finishing up he added perches, a door handle and latch, and put a grate between the run and the coop so they couldn’t escape under the coop. Now for a picture of the interior:

The feeder is now hanging up ,because they kept spilling food. Now for the most important part, my chickens! I have a a pair of Mille Fleur D’uccles : Luke who is gorgeous and sassy and Leia who is scared of the others, is SO friendly to me, and has a cross-beak. I also have 9 standard hens and pullets. My barred Rock and Easter Egger are both 9 years old and very sweet old ladies. My Columbian Wyandotte is about 5 and broody every spring and summer. My Wyandotte/Orpington hybrid that I hatched 4 years ago is almost as broody as the Wyandotte. And now the pullets who have old lady names! Winnie is my sweet Buff Orpington and is very mild mannered. I have two Prairie Bluebell Eggers: Gertie and Dottie. Dottie is pretty flighty and has a mild parrot beak. Gertie is a very pretty Blue and also very flighty. Lillian the Starlight green Egger is my smallest standard, but can stand up for herself. Last of all is my Rhode Island Red, Fern who is mild mannered to be a Rhode Island Red.

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed learning about my flock and coop! Please leave a review!

What a wonderful coop! Just out of curiosity, how long did it take your dad to build the coop? 😊

Well he started in sometime in Spring, took a break over summer, and finished in November.
I like your coop, and your birds are gorgeous! I’m looking through a lot of people’s information on their coops because with our growing flock we will need to expand our coop. One thing I really enjoyed about yours is the cute little signs you have. I think it’s make the coop so personalized! I never thought about adding something like that. Could I ask where you got them, if you know? I think it would be fun to add some to our coop someday.
