we were shopping at the produce market, and it happened to be the time of day that the guy was picking thru and getting rid of stuff on the cusp of yucky... he had a huge banana box sitting there full of stuff, so i sweetly asked if he'd mind if i picked thru it for my chickens. he said sure, so i started picking up various greenleaf lettuces and peeking in there and i saw multiple eggplants, squashes, green beans, carrots, etc... sooooo i EXTRA-sweetly asked if he'd mind if i just took the whole box and he said sure! they said i'm welcome to check and see what they've got anytime! i promised him some eggs and the peeps had a bit of a bonanza today!

there's no way they're going to eat it all before it goes bad (parcelling it out a bit at a time, or else they'd eat no chicken food at all!), so some will end up in our yard waste bin - but anyway! a reminder not to be shy at the grocery store/market - it never hurts to ask!

We have a corner produce market, they often put out bags of near done produce for 99 cents each. We often end up with a couple of bags to give to the chickens and the parrots. It is a great deal when they have what the birds will eat.

Good for you for asking. I often wonder if I asked at the local health food store, if they would give me carrot top trimmings, brocoli leaves and other stuff that they trim off the stock they put out in the store, but I have never been brave enough to ask.

My best friend works at WalMart in the produce section. They are not "allowed" to give away produce that they just through away. It is a HUGE waste! She just had to throw away over 200 pumpkins! They did however give me 10 bails of hay that they used outside as decorations. I used this hay to bank the outside of their coop.

linda - you should totally ask at the health food store! what's the worst that could happen? you'll ask, they'll say no, and as you walk away they'll murmur about crazy chicken people!

blows me away that walmart would rather throw stuff away than give it away... i guess they're worried that people might be wanting it for themselves??? i dunno. i don't see why it would matter either way, if they're just throwing it away. time to find a new grocery store to ask! i did ask our local safeway awhile back, and they were pretty sure that i could - i just never managed to hook up with the produce manager! soooooooo keep asking!
