I just now happend to look over at my Button Quail brooder..and i see one little one pecking kinda roughly at another one..(which i know they do..), but the one being pecked at wasnt moving away from the pecker(can i say that?..

..),..so, i looked closer, and OMG!..the one baby had a sock string (i had a sock in there for them..they liked to snuggle into it..) tied around his little tongue!..and the other one was trying to eat his tongue!..

...i grabbed him (and the sock..) out quickly, and was trying to look at his tongue w/out hurting him...and thankfully the string came off by itself when i gave a little tug..

..but, i noticed his tongue had a pretty deep groove cut into it....what do i do now?...is there even anything i can do?..will it fall off?...can they live with half a tongue?...it was about halfway down the tongue......so, word of warning..i guess socks arent safe in brooders....BTW..i had the sock turned inside out...maybe not so smart??..

Dont know what to tell you, but this is a good warning. The feed bags always have strings you pull and I'm careful not to drop those on the ground. I'm so glad you found out what the problem was! His tongue may be a bit swollen, but there's not much you can do except make sure he's able to eat and drink.

thanks...i just hope he dosent loose his tongue!..it was pretty bad looking..has a deep cut in it..he's kinda sitting in the corner now..breathing a bit heavy...but alert. Thanks again so much for responding..should i put anything in their water for him?...or make a mash?

hes got his beak open a bit and keeps shaking his head...

..i hope it dosent swell to much also!...cold water perhaps?..but he's only like a week old..i dont know about cold water for him?...

I would go to pharmacy and get a little tube of oral stuff that you put on canker sores. It could be applied with a q tip and would help with infection maybe ! Poor baby !!

thanks!..i am willing to try anything....i want to pick him up and check it again..but i dont want to stress him anymore...

..wish i had a vet in the family.....i'm not sure what to do!...thanks for the reply and help, Wendy

I would say give him really cold water with apple cider vinegar - this will help to cleanse it. Maybe a frozen treat to help with the swelling. Or some ice in the water.

In humans tongues heal extremely quick (like in a day or so) - I know dogs do as well - So I would assume the same goes for chickens.
Good luck.

thanks!.i just tried to check it out..i cant really get his beak open to good..i dont wanna' force it because he's so small...i dripped a few drops of water on his beak and he opened it a bit..i saw what looked like a bit of blood,....

...i think i will add some ACV to the water...thanks for the help, Wendy
