Hi all-

I am new here- we have had chickens for 8 months now and to date they have all been healthy. Our flock also contains 3 buff geese, 6 Khaki Campbells, currently 3 muscovies and 13 guineas.

We have 22 hens and 2 roosters and have not had any losses to disease among the chickens. This morning I found one of our gold lace wyandots recumbant with wry neck, some pasty stool around her vent. She still appeared to be in good feather, normal facial and oral exam, no cyanosis, but felt thin.

We put her down and found this:

Do you think this may be aspergillosis? She seemed to have some mild hemorrhage into her body cavity. Her GI tract seemed normal except for the diarrhea.

All our chickens were acquired at once from Murray Macmurray. The other hens do not seem to be acting sick.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Update- on closer examination- the affected organ appears to be the liver. This could be pullorum or tuberculosis? has anyone every seen these?

I've never seen that Matt...... Just looking at the pic, it looks like WAY TOO MANY egg folicles(developing yolk sacs).

I bought from McMurray also -- In April -- I argued with them over and over about babies arriving dead--only certain breeds. After quite some time I just gave up but over time more and more of my birds got ill until I lost over 100 birds. 2/3 of my flock died until the veteranarians and my local University were able to establish what was killing them. Fowl Laryngotracheitis. Not only this...I found that it is an epidemic of a much larger proportion with the exact same symptoms happening everywhere in other states!

I was told this disease probably originated in a hatchery and that they do not vaccinate for this. The strangest and most ironic thing of all is that I had the vaccine in my refrigerator and the vet kept telling me not to vaccinate my flock because if they already had the disease, vaccination would most-likely kill them.

I finally got smart on my own and fought back with NO help from anyone else. My flock is finally free from the disease because of ME. If anyone wants my advise I will help. I am convinced there is only one way to fight this. Step number ONE is DO NOT PURCHASE BIRDS FROM A HATCHERY. And whatever you do, do not purchase birds from ANYONE who is not tested NPIP--even then, you cannot be sure you are not getting a healthy bird right now. This stuff is everywhere.
