this might interest some people who don't want to spend a ton of money on those plastic or glavanized waterers. i even saw a thread where people on here complained about both. this would be a cheap alternative:

1-empty cat litter jug
1-water pan

recycle a cat litter jug with a screw on top and drill a hole about a inch above the base of the jug, set inside a water pan.
a instant self - waterer and for cheap!

i just wanted to share, because we have priced the store bought ones and they are expensive!
 
Wendy...I saw that thread too but can't remember where it is on here...Do you know?...I use a very large flower pot dish for one of the outside runs and this is perfect for me to use so I wouldn't have to haul so much water.....I tried using a large laundry bottle container but can't get the flow to stop without sealing off the lid all the time...maybe you have to turn it off all the time?....

with the hole so far down the can and it being under water and should stop flowing out.
 
I tried that and the water just kept flowing and spilling.......did I make the whole too big (about 1/2 round)? I used a 5 gallon bucket, so did I need a lid on top?
 
seems like a lid would cause suction and help it not to flow out to fast, i am thinking but i was not good in physics and all that! lol
it needs to be a small hole, i don't know the size of the drill bit. but like the thickness of a ice pick. if that helps, i know i am real technical here

the jug could last 6 months or more , so that is a pretty good deal.

The hole has to be under the waterline that is the main thing. 1/2 Inch hole is pretty big to

A waterer is based on a vacuum so if you make a hole in the bucket and there is even a pin hole on the top side of the bucket, it will leak. Basically, the hole has to be under the water... not that it has to be under, but rather , the water will go up to the top of the hole. If the most top hole is the top of the bucket, it will hold no water. To see this principle easily, take a clear cup and dip it into a fish tank to fill it with water. Now lift up the cup bottom side up and the water will follow the cup up until air can get into the cup. Really, if you had a bucket and filled it up, inverted it into a pool and pulled up up, doesn't matter the size of the hole, as long as air didn't go though it, it would hold water. Wonder if this makes any sense.... Basically you need a suction. You could have 50 1" holes as long as they were at the bottom of the bucket and not at the top where air could get in.
