I smell smoke ---

I have an empty lot next to my house and on other side of that there is a another house - it is on fire there are trucks all up and down my street I can see the house from my livingroom window ( thats how close) my chickens are running around thier yard freeked out and acting very stressed, my dogs are going nuts - my rooster is all puffed up and acting like he wants to " fight " whatever has his girls stressed out-- should I try locking them back in the coop till this is all over??
I have the scanner on and it sounds like there is still alot of work that needs to be done before everything calms down -- they are now calling the red cross in

on a positive note I just heard them say they are leaving the house with one live dog ( chihuahua)

i am going back out to check on my chickens

well everything is finally calmed down--
I ended up by having to lock the chickens back in the coop- my hens were acting really stressed with the smell of smoke and all the trucks and noise etc.. my roo was an edge wanting to attack everything he thought was stressing his girls - ducks could care less they had no clue what was going on and did not seem to care LOL

well the family lost a good bit of the house - red cross is going to help where it can, dont know how fire got started - no one was hurt thank god--
and the little dog that was pulled out of the fire seems to be doing well - they had him on oxygen for a little bit -

everyone in neighborhood will be helping with clean up and repairs next few weeks to get it done before cold weather sets in
but I think as far as fires goes this one could have been worse - thank god it was not

My parents lost their home to arson and it was a horrible experience. They were Christmas shopping for a few last things just days before Christmas in 2004 and my sister's lunatic ex-husband and his brother met them an hour away from home and he came and burned their home. They lost it all but a few pictures that were in plastic tubs which acted as a shield so a few were saved with only slight damage. I saw the smoke from my home and their neighbor called me to let me know. Everything was gone within minutes. Even though it's just possessions it's your life-37 years worth of theirs. And he got 72 months in jail and will be out in 18 months with good behavior!

Then my dad's black lab(which he loved like one of the family!) was found drowned in a pond on their property 2 weeks later while these jerks were still on the run. So I can relate to the scare of smoke. the smell of a house burning still makes me sick to my stomach.

chickengirlnm.....Oh wow....thats scarey! Im glad all made it out safely. Fire is so scarey..and unpredictable.
Rocket Raley....Wow...I guess I never thought about it that way. I have 4 dogs...and 3 keets...so much in 27 yrs of marriage....I have no idea what I would do. Time to make a plan....wow. I remember as a kid...I was 14....we went away for the weekend, and got a call...our house was gone...arson. We lost everything. Now as an adult..we have no baby pics for me to share with my kids. I have learned from that...share pics with ALL family members..if in case of fire...everyone in the family will have some to share back with you. Pictures are easily replaced that way.
Bamagirl...so sad. I am glad that everyone was safe...but the loss...wow, and at Christmas!! And, the poor DOG!! Jeesh! What a freak...and he is getting out?? Ugh!! I hope all will be safe.

Thanks! He just turned himself in in May of 2007. They sentenced him 2 weeks ago without even letting my folks know and have their words to the judge. It is really sad when your momma has to carry a gun to the mailbox and the chicken pen. And you live way out in the boonies!

After todays little adventure I am going to try to make a " just in case plan " the dogs , birds, chickens, the ducks, my computer - my home buiness ( i deliver the paper ) I dont know where to began making plans to keep everyone safe --
i ask myself what about the animals more than anything else- dogs cant fit in my little car to many of them, do I just let chickens go ? none would survive if I did that i live in a very busy neighborhood lots of loose dogs etc..etc...
i try to think " everything will be fine " but that was really close - to close for my liking.
I guess I just dont know what I would do in case of fire or other diaster until it happens.
All I can do is be thankful the neighbors are alright and no-one was hurt, and kiss all my babies good-night and say a little thank-you that they are safe and sound in thier little house.

as you all go to bed tonight and get your animals all tucked in and ready for bed give them all a little pet,hug or kiss and be thankful that everyone is safe and loved.

About five years ago we had a terrible forest fire that burnt out whole towns. My little summer house was in the thick of it. But the weekend before, I and my son had raked up all of the pine needles and cleaned up the yard. The fire burned almost to our cabin and stopped.

My kids wanted to go up to the rim and clean out the furnishings before the fire got to the house, but I told them it was just stuff, and we can always get more stuff. It was not worth risking our lives.

However, I had neighbors that lost everything. So, I bought a fire safe. All important papers and keepsakes are now locked away.

Keep the yard clean. Have a metal roof on the house. Buy good insurance and just pray.
