Luna was our family cockatiel. She loved to be held and we loved to hold her. She could say "hi Luna" and make kissing sounds.

if you opened your mouth she would stick her whole head inside your mouth and clean the back of your teeth! She was very smart and was constantly opening the door of her cage and escaping. She figured that anything humans put into their mouths was edible, and if you ate anything with Luna on your shoulder, she would shimmy down your shirt and take the liberty to eat from your plate. Luna even came with us on vacation! To put it bluntly, Luna was very dear to us.

During the day, Luna and the two male cockatiels were put into our huge apricot tree during the day because they made too much noise in the house, and they were bored in their cage. They had clipped wings, of course, so they could climb all over the tree.

One evening, Luna had taken it into her head to climb to the very top of that apricot tree, and my mom was trying to lure her down with a stick. Luna, with clipped wings, lost her balance and fell to the ground, right into the claws of a raccoon, who was hiding under the stairs. The idiot slaughtered our darling Luna in a single instant.

I already ABHOR raccoons, with a passion, because one wriggled into the chicken coop at night at slaughtered sixteen of my own babies. But I despise them even more now, because they killed our Luna.

RIP

I'm very sorry you lost your baby.

To think the racoon was there and waiting,

. I know it hurts when you lose one to a predator like that. About 1 1/2 years ago, we lost or dear hand raised Quaker to a darn hawk. Took her on Christmas day, right on our deck!

I still get upset when I think about it. Here's a few more for you

Aw, I'm so sorry.

She sure sounds like a doll, sneaky raccoon! What a terrible way to lose her! I would hate raccoons too after that.

Sorry about your bird. That is a really, really unsual story about a raccoon. I've never heard anything like that before. Do you live in a city? Are your neighbors feeding them? While some can lose their fear of humans, it's really odd for one to sit around waiting to catch a bird that falls from the sky while humans are right there.
