wil a hawk or owl take my chicks

If my 9 year old is in the back yard playing with our one month old chicks will a hawk or a owl be bold enough to take one if she is with them, they fly above her and watch her play with them? Also when they are full grown are hawks and owls still able to take them?:thun
 
Yes, Yes, and Yes. My 2 yo little bro was out w/ my full grown Japanese and crevecoeurs, and a hawk came by and flew off w/ my favorite little mottled hen. It was really upsetting because she was my first show bird.
 
Yep and they dont care if you are out there or not. Young hawks are still stupid and will try and then again older hawks that really want it will to and so will owls. I have netting over a run and a owl got in and couldnt get out...thankfully I got out there before he could get to any of mine and got it out. They dont care as they are hungry and will do it.
 
Yes they will. My 5 year old walked right up to the hawk that had our EE hen in it's beak he reached out and was almost able to pulled the hen out of the hawk's beak before he flew away!!

Like Chatychick said if they are hungry they will do it!!
 
Ahhh, that would be a big YES --hawk or owl chow in a blink of your eye. Be careful. We saw a red tailed hawk swoop down in our front yard (urbania neighborhood here) and grab a big fat turtle dove, I mean a BIG one, and gobbled it down in a matter of inutes, left a few feathers and screeched off --chickens would be just as easy. I had my Reds out (only under supervision!) the other day and we all heard a hawk at the same time - they came running near my feet and I started scooping thme up and putting them back in their pen just to be sure they didn't look too tasty from 100 feet!

When I was little we had a lot of chickens. One hen had 15 chicks and we where out side all day with her. By the end of the day half of the chicks were gone. We didnt notice, but knew who th only culprit could be. Be careful hawks can be bold.
 
I lost a 28 week old (no chick-a full grown hen!) to a mature red-tailed hawk (over 4' wing span, it seemed like) yesterday. I was gardening not 30 feet away.

I have admired and watched hawks my whole life; I did not think they would try to take one of my mature birds.

Sadly, I was wrong.
 
I don't understand why hawks fly over my yard when there are so many pigeon owners in this neighborhood and they fly around in the morning to exercise.
 
Well, in part it depends on the type of hawks you have.

Some hawks hunt the ground; a red-tailed hawk is such a bird.

Some raptors hunt the air; a peregrine falcon is an example.

Most of the hawks who hunt pigeons are (obviously) air-to-air striking birds who would not be interested in your chickens at all, and vice-versa.
