A few questions about Spurs

I knew that roosters grow spurs, but holy cow! I just saw the scariest looking things in my live.

I'd like to know a few more things on spurs.


1. When do they start growing. My cockerals,I was told, are about 16-18 weeks and they are just little knobs. Are my guys younger than expected?

2. Do females get spurs? Or do they stay little knobs?

3. Is it more promident in some breeds than others?

I am wondering, not for my sake, but for my children. Any information or links and even pictures on this topic is truly appreciated.
 
They will probably start to grow out within the next few weeks. I think around 20 weeks is when I've started to notice them grow.

Some females can get spurs. Most of the time they do not though. I had some welsummer hens a while back and they had some spurs. I also have a game hen right now I keep her for raising chicks and she has some mean looking spurs. But Even when I pick her up and carry her around they have never harmed me.

The roosters in all breeds will get spurs some breeds may get longer than others I guess.


Id your roosters don't become aggressive you shouldn't have a problem with their spurs. There are also methods of getting rid of the spurs. Some used a hot baked potato you push it onto the spur and keep it there for I believe 30 seonds or so and supposedly it pops the spur off. There are threads on that on here though you can use the search feature.
 

Here's a great link that I keep in my files although I don't have roosters. I always figured it was good to keep just in case.

I always used electrical pliers, they're sharp, but would only cut off a 1/2". That way they didn't blead and they still had some if they needed them. I can't imagine it didn't hurt after seeing that blood. Maybe I'm just soft. Like trimming a large dogs toenails.

I think I like the cutting it flat idea. It seems the safest for my children.

Any other links or info? Or pictures. Pictures are good! I'd like to see those game hens with spurs. I have one that's a mix. That's why I asked about the females. Her legs have hard knobs starting.
