A man with a chicken farm told me to sprinkle sevendust on my chickens to get rid of mites.... It sounds like a terrible idea to put a pesticide on my chicken, any opinions?
Again, type sevin dust in the search box on the upper right of the page. It will link you to all kids of sevin dust discussions. That is the easiest way to research this.
Sevin was always one of those chemicals that seemed safe to use on anything, animals, vegies etc. Now it seems they are finding out it isn't as safe as they thought. Best thing to do would be google it and search these archives here, I know there are some good discussions on it here. I think it is being banned or talked about being banned for some applications, and it's killing the honeybees. I used the powder for a flea infestation once in my coop and run, and my chickens lived to a ripe old age.
Sevindust is what we have used before and many people use it. But it is now being banned for use on poultry... And yes it kills bees like pesticides are supposed to do "including DE".
It may cost some more, but use food grade DE.
You won't have to worry about it them. I even put it in their food. All my critters get dusted regularly with it. No pest of any kind, the dogs don't even get ticks now. Might sound silly, all my camping gear and cloths i use camping get a dusting before I put it up. No surprises the nest time I go camping. Somne people even mix if with water and drink it.
Several years ago I had a hen that became very lethargic. In checking her over I discovered that she was infested with mites. I rubbed a couple of handsful of Sevin on her...
she finished the job when she shook after I put her down.
It worked like magic! She was healthy and beautiful again in no time! I also threw out a light dusting in the chicken house.
