I have a Just Us Chickens calendar for 2008. It includes a chicken fact or trivia for each month and I thought I would share them with all of you. Some of these things I knew from the forum and some were new to me.
Here they are:
January- It takes a hen 24 to 26 hours to lay an egg. If incubated, a chick will hatch 21 days later.
February- A chicken's heart beats between 280 and 315 times a minute!
March- There are approximately 450 million chickens in the United States.
April- In 1994, the chickens in the United States laid 73,866 million eggs.
May- The largest egg ever laid by a chicken was 12 1/4 inches in diameter and weighed 12 ounces.
June- The chicken is the closet living relative of the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
July- There are seven individual types of combs on chickens: strawberry, rose, single, pea, buttercup, cushion, and V-shaped.
August- The Ameraucana and Anaucana chicken can lay colored eggs in shades of blue or green depending on the breed.
September- In 1979, a White Leghorn chicken set a world record by laying 371 eggs in 364 days.
October- Chickens can run up to nine miles per hour.
November- The largest number of yolks ever recorded in one chicken egg is nine!
December- The furthest distance ever flown by a chicken is 301 1/2 feet.
Hmmm-No wonder it is hard to catch a chicken! Between running and flying they can easily out do me!
All I can say about May is: OUCH!!!!!!
