Yet another chick identification thread. I unexpectedly acquired 7 chicks today from someone who had a more successful hatch rate than anticipated! Woo Hoo for me! These are my first ever chicks (and chickens) and I am super excited. After all of the reading I have done on this, and other, sites I am finally a chicken owner.

But I have no clue what kind of chicks they are. They are about 3 weeks old and happy little girls.

First up I have 4 of these:

I was told that they might be RIR - but I don't think they are. I am pretty sure I have 2 girls and 2 boys. 2 of them are significantly behind on feather development and have sturdier legs - that means boys right?

Next was a singularly uncooperative photo subject:

She/he is the least feathered out of the crew and substantially larger than the rest. A lovely blue/grey color and feathered blue/grey legs. As I was trying to get a good photo he/she decided that he/she would rather be ON MY SHOULDER and jumped there.

All of the stand alone pics of this little one came out badly she wouldn't stand still

I was told that she might be a BLRWyandotte - there is no comb to speak of, yellow legs.

Finally there is a pretty black chick who also doesn't like having her picture taken:

here is a decent shot in the brooder of the patterning, this one has black legs.

And here is a close up:

the very tips of the comb are turning black - does that mean that he is a boy? This one is the most feathered out so I have no idea.

Any help you can give me is great. I am so excited I could bust!

I am sorry, I just realized that there is a What Breed/Gender is this thread. If I could move this I would.

I think picture #3 is a Golden Laced! Not sure if actually Wyandotte, but I think I see the lacing already in the wing feathers, and she has the same head coloring as my GLW chicks!

The other ones below that one I think has some barred/cuckoo coloring coming in. Not sure though.

Hopefully I help instead of confuse!

Good luck!

I would be tickled pink with a GLWyandotte.

I though the same regarding the black/white - but what is the difference between barred & cuckoo?

And I was wrong about the grey chick - his legs are partially black and partially pink/yellow - don't know if that makes a difference?

Number one is definately a partridge Plymouth Rock, a very rare variety. The next looks like a blue Orpington, although those green/blue legs confuse me. Second to last is definately a golden-laced Wyandotte. Last looks like a NOT barred Rock. Maybe cuckoo maran?

Barred is pretty wide, while cuckoo is soft and even stripes.

I agree #1, #2, #4 look like boys to me..
#3 looks girl.
#1 & #3 looks like they could be an easter egger (EE)

Breeds I have really no idea. But they could be just barnyard mixes..

Thanks!

The breeder that they came from has Welsummers - could the first one be a Welsummer and not a Rock? And I am pretty sure the breeder had some Marans in there somewhere - so the last is a definite possibility.

Chickenlittle I tried to get some pics of one of the Red type that I think are cockrels. There are two that look like the pic - well feathered, very small combs and thin legs - and then the other two have larger combs, thicker legs and about 1/2 as many feathers - which is what makes me think that the one in the pic is a girl.

But really, I am so new at this I have very little clue. Most everything I know I know from reading y'all!

The eggs all came from a breeder. The lady who bought the said that the breeds were written on the shells - but when they hatched she couldn't figure out which went with which chick.

The breeder is Little Gem Hatchery and I think they used to have a much more extensive listing of chickens they sold - he is specializing now. I think they used to have several kinds of Wyandottes (which makes the GL make sense) and several varieties of Marans.

But the hatcher also mentioned RIR - so who knows? I don't think any of them are mutts though.

Not that there is anything wrong with mutts!

Hey Neighbor! Fancy meeting you on here! I'm the person who has talked to you on meetup boards and lives around the corner from you. Your chicks are so cute! The BLRW chick is a blue. Little Gem hasn't had any Golden Laced in a while. I was actually there last week! And I think chick 1 is a Welsummer. You should email the pictures to Lee & Ginny at Little Gem, they could tell you what they are.

I have no clue what that fuzzy blue on is. . . but I LOVE it!

Have Fun!

Hey! It's a small chicken world.

I can't believe I was lucky enough to score these - the hatcher posted on the MeetUp group and I happened to be in her neck of the woods visiting my parents. AND I happened to decide to check MeetUp on my hubbie's new smart phone. Several coincidences came together to tell me "NOW is the time to get chicks."

When the rain calms down you are welcome to come over and see the Cook & Chicks if you would like.

And soooo Excited it is a BLRW! Now here's hoping it's a girl
