Australorp x Jersey Giant chicks?

I'm crossing my Australorp cockerel with 3 of my Jersey Giant hens an am going to hatch chicks. I was wondering if the chicks would be 50/50? If not, is it possible for them to come out with opposite leg colors? Like Jersey Giants with pink/white feet instead of yellow, and Australorps with yellow feet instead of pink/white? I'm just wondering because I'm going to be having purebred Australorps in there too and I don't want to get them all confused. I would seperate them when they lay, but then they won't lay for me unless they're altogether. It gets...complicated.

White skin/shanks are dominant to yellow skin shanks. All the pure bred Australorp and Australorp X Jersey Giant chicks will have white shanks .

Thank you so much David! Do you know any way I would be able to tell the difference between the two when they're chicks then? I'm asking for when I plan on selling them.

Well, when selling them, they are simply crosses, or mutts. They would not be pure. David said they will all have white shanks.

If you are mixing them (mutts) in with pure breds, you should band them or it will be a big mess. Take it from me .... I know, as I am still trying to figure out 3 of my chicks that are 19 weeks old!

I've been running out my back door like crazy each time one of my hens lay. That way I know for sure if they're crossed or purebred. I'm also keeping them in seperate cartons. Although, I have about six I'm not sure of if they're crossed or pure because I randomly found them outside. Either way I know they're fertile, so I'm keeping them anyways. And when I put them in the incubator, I'm going to put them in rows based from carton to carton so I don't lose track. I'll also mark them lightly with a pencil or something.

Bumping this old thread out of curiosity -- how did those chicks turn out?

I have a JG roo, and some Australorp pullets on the way, and am wondering about a cross.

Say, Clay Mudd, did you ever get a reply on that? it's 2013 and I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Switched to Australorps for dual purpose in 2011. Been seriously processing for meat only recently. I've found, so far, that the roos at 24 weeks aren't too bad. Just processed two at 18 weeks and was sorely disappointed. Waiting on my first shipment of broilers to raise to see which I prefer working with. But, I'm thinking I would prefer to keep something that is dual purpose but a bit more meatier than the Australorp.

I just added some Black Jersey Giant chicks to my admittedly non-show-quality Black Australorp flock. It should consist of a BA roo, 7 BJG hens, and 17-21 BA hens (depending on the male/female outcome of the 8 straight run chicks.)

The folks in the Australorp thread think I'm nuts! :)

I'm locking at this way also. I have read that a lot matters which roo./hen you go. JG x white leg horn hens done great every way. The leg roo x JG hen had little egg production and long growth time but still beat both breeds in grow speed and egg production somewhat..
