Nature preserve Jungle fowl..we have them in Ohio!

For a couple of years we've been trying to figure out what breed Dazzle is. Well, now we think we know! Dazzle has the same white mark at the base of his tail as the rooster in krturpie's picture (you can't see it in our pics). His brother, Rusty, had a lot more of the gold and bronze on his back and neck than Dazzle does. The black hen, (Raven) is Dazzle's sister. Rusty fathered a cockerel last year who looked just like him. They were both later killed by coons. I was so excited when I saw krturpie's pic! The collage pics show Dazzle, Rusty, and Raven when they were younger. We are hoping that Dazzle will father some more that look like him. What do ya'll think...is he a jungle fowl???!!

We got him as a chick and he came with a Frizzle Cochin hen who was probably his mother, but we are not sure, she could've been sitting on a bunch of eggs and just mothered them all. But, if she is his mother that is probably where the weird little crest thing came from. The rooster in the pic of the week doesn't have that, and he has a bit more color, but, like I said, Rusty and his son Dusty both had a lot of color, and the similarity, we thought, is very striking.

The rather green colored fellow that I took a pic of at Hanuama Bay was a regular denizen of the park there and very tame. He seemed to like to mill amongst the tourist's beach towels, scrounging for food or hand outs.

Jungle Fowl , or Moa as they're called by the native Hawaiians, were originally brought to the Hawaiian Islands by Polynesian settlers, and are related to the original, ancient breed domesticated from the wild. Amongst the Hawaiian Islands, they are now essentially non-existent outside of Kauai b/c of the invasive mongoose brought in much more recently to address the rat problem (which didn't work). Obviously, there are still a few wild chickens on Oahu. However, the birds on Oahu are so different from the Red Jungle Fowl on Kauai, that I've wondered if folks on Oahu are really correct in calling them Jungle Fowl. Well, at least one notable difference is that they have no red feathers, only the green and yellow. So, they could be some other more contemporary breed gone feral or more likely a cross between the
and domestic chickens that got loose (one study http://www.gct.org.uk/psg/tragopan/tragopan16.pdf showed that about 96% of the wild chickens on Kauai had some genetic connection to modern chickens, so Oahu's surely must at least have something else rolled in too).

Hopefully, someone on BYC will give us better info on the exact nature of the Oahu wild chickens (especially our members in Hawaii). Otherwise, all I can say about them is that they appear to breed true in the jungles there, which may be the only reliable basis to call them jungle fowl (without the caps).

I'm certainly not an expert, but your roo looks a bit darker and the plumage is a little different; not as green in your photos. So, maybe he's a hybrid that just came up looking similar. But maybe your roo might has expressed the features of some ancient breed. Perhaps only DNA analysis would tell us for sure. Who knows? He sure is a very beautiful roo, though.

possibly not a jungle fowl per se, but descendant of one, probably bred for (that use which is prohibited here) by someone in the neighborhood, then went feral, adopted us

colors may not come through perfectly, it was a cloudy day, but his "cape" is golden to orange, tailfeathers metallic green with purple shine, definitely has the white tufts at the base of his tail
 
Hey, mahalo and aloha Candy. He's definitely a beaut. He does look a lot like the birds over on Kauai. Do you have anymore info on the green wild chickens on Oahu?
