Got our first chickens on first of march.
A Brahma and a buff Orpington.

We have a large fenced backyard where they can roam around free.
First day they were allowed out and no problems so far.

On the 7th of march the Orpington stayed in the coop/nesting box for hours, but nothing happened.
On the 9th she finally gave us an egg:

It looked like something of a membrame was wrapped around the outside of the egg shell.
We ate it and tasted "normal". didn't look weirdon the inside.

2 days later she gave us a "soft shell egg" (unfortunately no picture)
Again 2 days later we found a "transparent sack", the size of an egg but totally empty. (also no picture)

Since then she hasn't produced an egg any more. Once in a while she will sit in the breeding box for a couple
of hours but nothing.

The brahma started laying a week later after the Orpington. She lays 2 days in a row, skips 2 days, and then 2
days with an egg again.

Since we are really new to this, i was wondering if somebody here has some ideas what might be happening
to the Orpington.
It's been 3 weeks now since she gaves us the "empty egg/membrane". She eats normal, her poo is "okay" (as far as
i can tell) She is the whole day free roaming. When i start digging both chickens join me and start eating the insects etc.

Me and my partner like it so much that yesterday we expanded with 4 pullets:
2 x Ameraucanas, a Rhode Island Red and a Black Sex-link:
One of the Ameraucanas was too shy to be photographed

Just interested and curious if anyone has seen/heard this before.

I never imagined we would be so intrigued by those funny animals.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Pullets just starting to lay will lay all kinds of weird eggs, and are not consistent. Be patient.

Also, if you haven't done this already, consider putting vitamins & electrolytes in their water. (Durvet's is good for all animals, and you just add 1/8-1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water.)

Good luck!

You were right!

Today the BO started her laying behaviour again, first in the nesting box, then she came out in to the coop, she walked around for half an hour, making movements something needed to go "out", walking "wide legged".
We felt sorry for her, but we couldn't do much about it.
We went to the local farmers market for vegatables/fruit and when we returned we found an egg in a "ditch".
Length was larger than 2" and was almost _round_

weight was 2 oz, felt heavier than what we are used to.
I can imagine she was under stress getting this out.

Do you have to do this _all_ the time ?

I found that our Brahma was picking on her today, i grabbed the BO and checked for insects (couldn't find any)
but her feathers are so fluffy, i wonder if she started molting.

Will start new topic in the right forum for that with photo's

Thanks for your feedback!
