I just got a brinsea octagon 20 eco and I just realized how will I filll the water tray up with water??!! The incubator is full and I cant find a gap to even fill it with water!!!! How do I fill the tray up with water without wetting all the eggs??!!

I just check the water level every few days by shining a flashlite down into the top. Refill by taking the top off. Fill reservoirs before lockdown. I've had very good hatches with my own eggs (94% and higher). LOVE my Brinsea!

A syringe with a little bit of 02 tubing or other medical type tubing works great! The syringe is easy to find. If you need a little tubing, email me and I will send you a little. Being an RN... it is plentiful in my day! :)

I open the incubator, remove the tray with the eggs in it (make CERTAIN you pull it out correctly from the rim on the long sides - the first time I pulled it out I did not grab it effectively), and add the water. Then I put the tray back and the lid back. Takes about a minute.

This is fine as long as you're not in lockdown.

I will try to the tubing and syringe method cause I have those supplies already. Its a great idea!! If it doesnt work out so well I will just life the egg rack and fill the tray. THANKS!!!

yep...I take the lid off, and take a measuring cup and pour into the resevoirs right between the eggs..my egg tray is full too and I Have no problem pouring water between eggs.

After this hatch.. I have an extra peristaltic pump and tubing from my fish tank, and I'll be drilling a hole for the tubing into the reservoir and silicone caulking it shut...and then adjusting the output of the pump to maintain 50% humidity. It should work perfectly, and will cost MUCH less than the humidity units Brinsea sells.

I will post pics of this modification when I do it.

There is no reason to not simply do like Poltroon suggested. As a matter of fact, that is the method with the least risk to the eggs and/or much simpler than syringes. There is evidence that "rest periods" can actually increase hatch percentages, I think it's even mentioned right in the handbook. Keep in mind that mother hens hop off the eggs for a few minutes every now and again to eat and drink. Just pop the top off, pull out the egg tray (carefully) fill the reservoir as needed, and put the tray and top back on, simple as that. Getting water on the eggs isn't a good thing, why risk it, when simply doing the above is actually good for the hatch?

As for the lockdown period, filling both reservoirs as instructed just before lockdown should provide more than enough water to last the few days. That being said, I would like the auto humidity module, but it just seemed pretty pricey for something that isn't difficult to accomplish manually. I might still want it one day though . . . because I'm pretty danged lazy by nature, heheh, and I just like "automatic" stuff.
