Our smallest chick has had problem's from day 1. At first I had no idea why she was so listless. So tired looking then I thought oh she's perking up she was just stressed and tired. Now that she has space and is pampered she should do fine. Then I noticed the scab on Sunday evening. And the swollen hind end of the chick... Iv since put her on antibiotics and cleaned the area with boric acid (that's why it looks wet.. it's actually a very dry scab) iv been told to puncture it with something very clean and sharp, iv been told to leave it be and let nature do it's best. I really want to save this chick. She is some thing special... Any ideas on what it is and why it's there and what to do? I am a complete newbie to chickens but I'm doing my best.

Ok well thanks for the free bump thechickengoesRAWR. I'm afraid of puncturing the infection, but I'm afraid of leaving it in there too... what if it's internal orgins or something I can't help at all... I'm just at a loss. And she is so plucky, so sweet. She will just sit on our hand's and look at us curious and trusting....

I would just leave it be for now. If she's acting fine, then she probably is fine. More than likely over the next few days it'll disappear. We've had various weird things with our chicks too, and most of the time they just go away on their own.

She's a cutie! Enjoy.

Thanks birdmom. I'm very nervous seeing as how this is my first time around, and we started off with a weak chick then she get's better only to wind up with this problem... I'm going to leave it be. If she makes it she makes it, if not... then I did everything short of trying to preform some rudimentary surgery in my kitchen without any type of numbing medication...
