Well, we tried to incubate eggs in a fish tank bator (never again! with out putting in a thermostat and other fancy gear, we were using a dimmer switch). We started with 15 eggs and about a week ago finially gave up on all but 3 eggs. We had some huge spikes and lows with the temps. When we cracked them open it was obvious that we had lost them pretty early on. So we had the 3 eggs left, and about 4 days ago I saw that one appeared to be developing a blood ring and didn't quite look like the other two. But didn't want to give up on it yet because there was still some veining. Left it in the bator. Candled a day ago, and the other two eggs were completely filled in, just like they should be at this point, and the other one was just as I remembered. Well, having had enough with our little experiment, I put the two eggs that looked well formed in our real incubator that had arrived during this whole thing and is currently being used for Call duck eggs because I figured anything is better than this fish tank. Left the other one in the tank, with the light on because kids begged me to candle it one more time just to be sure. I didn't want it in the other bator because I have heard of exploding eggs. But I took no pains to adjust the heat in there because I just knew it was gone. Temps were running around 90-91. Was just trying to appease the kids.

So, today, as promised, I candled the egg. My daughter keeps saying she sees movement and I am trying to tell her that it is just my hand. But she insists so I just sit real still with it for what seemed like five minutes, and then all of the sudden... I saw it! Total Movement! And then again, and one more time! I practicly jumped out of my skin. LOL. So I don't know how, or why this little thing is still kicking, I place it at least five plus days behind the other eggs, even though they were all set at the same time, but I am thrilled and have my fingers crossed. I popped it in the good bator with the other two and of corse will give it longer than the others to hatch. I hope it does. I feel so bad even trying this batch of eggs in the tank.

Hope it hatches for you!

Well, I candled the egg again today and it has already filled in a ton! In one day! Has anybody ever had this happen? Was the chick okay? I am so excited for it! The other two are due to hatch any time now. This will be our first hatch. I am so glad I was able to move them.

It may hatch and there is hope. What sometimes will happen when the incubating temperatures were too low is that you get a chick that is sort of a "preemie". Some will hatch and still have the yolk sac still attached to their abdomen. As long as the sac is not too large and their intestines are not exposed (that can happen too), they can survive with some TLC. Others will pip the egg and make an attempt at hatching but their pulmonery system is not developed enough to take oxygen from the air. Basically they drown in fluids. The chicks have a built-in bioligical clock and will try to hatch when they are due, whether or not they are fully developed. I hope you get a healthy chick, but if you get a preemie, it still has a pretty good chance at surviving.

Thanks for the info! and encouragement. Nothing yet on the little guy/girl. Still waiting. My first chick from that batch hatched day before yesterday. So, we'll see.....
