My Coop
My Coop
So this use to be my tree house when I was growing up. Then, when I was in college, I hatched out a pair of Muscovies and my dad modified with hardware cloth & that's where my 'scovies lived for two years.

My parents are trying to clean up their yard so we hauled it home from Portland a year or two ago.

The top was actually the bottom of my tree house. My dad sawed the legs off to get it into our truck.

Here it is a week ago:

Here is the spot I chose to put it...you can see Cash drinking from the goose pool

I went to Home Depot and got cement blocks for it. It took my hubby a little bit to get it lifted and I had to arrange the blocks!

Here's what it looks like now!

It's not very big (4' wide x 6' long) but I think it will work. It's actually SIDEWAYS now...hubby is going to move it again before it gets too much heavier. We're going to use the backhoe to smooth out the ground and reset the blocks. The slope will go off the back of the coop (opposite of my existing coop). I am on the hunt for some good windows, too. I bought some vents but have since decided we might be just leaving the top part open (hardware cloth) along the roof line on the south side for ventilation.

We're also disagreeing about the pop door--hubby wants it in the floor, and I want it in the side with a COVERED ramp to prevent drafts.

My thinking with it in the side is that eventually, I can split it into TWO coops (it would house two pairs) and I can add another breed!

BTW, this will NOT be insulated and NOT be heated.

Looking good. You have a lovely piece of land. When I looked at you pics my first thought was "that looks like where grandma lived"- spent many summers there. So I scrolled up to see where you're from. Sure enough you're in WA. Not anywhere close to Port Orchard wich is where she lived but it really does look the same.

Not much new has happened to it because we're building a covered patio & breezeway onto the back of our house this weekend...but hubby & his friend took a break this morning to fishing for Triploids--so I'm planning to go out & work on it a little. I just have a ton of hardware cloth that needs to be removed. I had planned to save the old stuff because it's expensive but DH decided to crumble & bend it to the point I don't think it's salvageable!?

Oh and I got about 100 willow (golden & corkscrew) cuttings from a co-worker yesterday so I spent a few hours dipping them in rooting hormone & potting them. They are going to go on the south side of the house, up the driveway, around the round pen, near the tack shed and on the west side of the coops.

My Orloffs are growing like weeds and they've been supervising the construction! LOL

So my assignment today is to pull the rest of the hardware cloth off and use the metal rake to level off that spot a little more.

Then, hubby is cutting the legs all the same so it's more balanced and we're turning it around so the slope will be off the back (interesting, I know because the snow will slide off so I'm not sure why he did that way, but yeah...) so it's also moving a little bit off to one side (I'd like to have two breeds in this coop with two runs. One side will probably be for extra roosters and/or meaties and then my Orloffs on the other side. If I ever get my hands on another project, they'll also go out there....

Okay--so we just came inside...WHEW!

We got the bottom leveled, added extra supports, got the ground level, the coop flipped around and leveled, the old hardware cloth taken off, the floor put in and the back wall put up (north wall). OH and we also got the two pop holes in the floor done!
