Hello everyone I thought I'd share my coop's project progress.

Here is the spot I picked to build the coop on, it's heavily shaded 24/7 in the summer & that should help keep the chickens cool in the heat, I marked out the area with landscaping timbers to get a general idea.

First I framed out the coop's floor.

Then I framed out the under the coop run, I left gaps on front & back corners so I can build gates.

Next I laid the coop floor & started framing in the front of the coop.

Then I framed in the back of the coop & started framing in the roof.

A couple of photos of me & my helper to give everyone a general idea of the scale of the coop.

Then I finished framing in the roof, cut out & built the under the coop run's ramp & added some cross beam supports, with the two cross beam supports in the middle double as roosts.

I still need to work out a better rope/pully system to raise & lower the under the coop run's ramp but I needed to test the fit of the ramp real quick so sloppily I tossed a piece of rope over the rafter for now.

Anyway I'll continue to update as I go, I'd appreciate any & all feed back or advice that you experienced coop builders are willing to give & I am happy to answer any & all questions that any other newbies like myself might have about my coop's construction.

Thanks Annie!

I have really enjoyed doing this project so far, everything from sketching out the coop's design on paper, to measuring and cutting all of my pieces & screwing them all together, and (hopefully soon) painting it up real cute.

It has taken me a little longer than I initially anticipated but I think when it's finished I'll be very happy with it (and hopefully so will my chickens!).

Looking good and it does look like a nice shady area and a very easy to build coop. I look forward to seeing your progress.

I'm not sure I would have made the hole in the floor so big. You'll need to put a lip around the top sides to keep your litter from ending up down in the run.

Make sure you use hardware cloth and not chicken wire.

Thanks Sweet Cheeks!

I finished up all of my framing today, but I can't start cutting & hanging my sheets of plywood until my wife gets home to help, anyway here are a couple of photos w/all of the framing finished and of course one photo of my youngest daughter being silly & acting like a giant chicken!

Your "real "chickens just may have a tad bit of a problem getting in and out of the coop due to the steepness of the ramp.

Update, finished up painting the coop's frame.

The exterior of the coop with be the same base color only a little darker (two coats instead of one) with all of the trim pieces painted white in typical, traditional red barn fashion.

Looks good! One thing is that chicken ramp, which not only is a bit steep but is really too large, and takes away some real estate from your coop floor space. (And it would be easier to lift with a hook & eye bolt and wire if it were skinnier.)

Other than that, I'm impressed. Good space beneath the coop, shouldn't be too hard to clean or capture chickens under there. Great framing and good slant on the roof.

I wish I had made that kind of a coop for my first try!!!
