worried about one of my girls :( - update with vets verdict

she's an ex-battery farm rescue, about two years old i'm guessing. normally so full of life and in your face friendly. since this morning (currently just after 1:30pm here) she's been slow moving, looks all puffy, her neck is all squat so her head is close to her body and even refusing some of her favourite treats. The other four younger girls all seem fine and happy as per usual. she laid an egg this morning. she looks like she's shivering every now and then and is currently standing in our sunroom because it's cold and wet outside (jealous of you northern hemisphere people in summer right now

). we've had one other ex-battery farm girl get similar symptoms months ago and she passed away.

anyway have just called the vet and the soonest they can see her is in about four hours. hope there is something they can do. she is my favourite, has heaps of character. she's the only one that will jump up on you for pats and eats out of your hand every chance she gets. if i sleep in she comes inside to find me in the morning because there's always a door open for the old dog we've got.

just wanted to share because i'm home alone with her on holiday from study and have four hours to get more worried...

so i got more worried about her and made her a nice comfy spot next to me on the bed (it's cold and wet and i'm being lazy and sitting on the bed with the laptop

). had a towel for her to stand on with some food for her. she was much the same, often had her eyes shut, not looking very happy at all. so i leave the room for five minutes and just as i walk back into the room she does a big yellow runny poo right on the mattress about half a foot from her towel and runs off down the hall and goes outside

she looks a bit better but still going to take her to the vet just in case.

doing things like pooing on the mattress just before running outside is part of why i like her so much

Let us know what the vet says. My fingers are crossed! She sounds like the type to make a full recovery en route to the vet just to keep you guessing.
 
oh yes that'd be just like her. will post what the vet's opinion is for sure.

once when she came inside and got shooed out again as soon as i sat down on the couch she hopped back into the sunroom, looked straight at me, turned around, pooed, hopped out again and walked off, couldn't help but laugh!

they're in the middle of being wormed at the moment too, getting flubenol 5% in layer mash as per instructions that came with it. any chances of side effects anyone knows of? they were fine last time they got it so i'm guessing that the timing is just a coincidence?
 
so we took her to the vet. explained the major symptoms she's had today - listlessness, loss of appetite, looking all puffy etc as described in the first post pretty much. and the yellow runny poo.

after a fair bit of poking and prodding, through which vera was awfully brave and well behaved and didn't peck anyone in the eye, the vet suspected she may have had an egg not form properly at some point recently. common in the production breeds used in battery farms she reckoned. she took her off to the back room and attempted to remove any left over yolk or other gunk that may be in her. not much was removed but there was something there so that was lucky for vera as increases her chances of a good recovery as it may not be that bad.

over the next week we have to give her Baytril orally to minimise the chance of an infection developing and Metacam orally as an inflammatory to help with any pain or discomfort vera is experiencing.

the vets were great, we're lucky to have one that specialises in birds and they also help run a wild bird rescue and care place. they liked vera and she got lots of pats and praise from them
