I have a baby chick, a day old, I had to help her out her shell, over a period of about 24 hours.

Her left leg is sticking out to the side, the foot was also crumpled up - I put a band-aid on her foot, but she can't keep her leg under her.

she is in the brooder with three other little chicks now, on papertowel covered shavings. she's eating, she pooped, and I have had to move her to the water a few times.

Any suggestions?

Thanks spotted....

I had a band-aid on her foot, and decided to take it off.... I made a little boot thing out of a piece of cardboard and some of that white bandage tape.
I put a piece of yarn around the top of her leg and then stuck it to her body underside, with that bandage tape.. its helped a little, she actually STOOD up but fell over on taking a step.

Here is a pic - while I was taking off the bandaid.

Thanks Scrambled. SHe can move but not well at all..... I have sprinkled food around on the paper towels and she's picking at that, she can't get to the water very well, I have picked her up and dipped her beak in it a few times (daily) she doesn't seem interested in the water.... I dip her beak in three times and then put her back under the heater.

Its so heartbreaking, I'm hoping she will grow fast - that will help her legs grow straight now they're stuck together. I thought last night I SHOULD have used a tiny piece of Vet wrap, it sticks only to itself and is slightly stretchy.... perhaps if we have to change the tape between her legs we can try the vet wrap.

Every chicken book ive read said never help a chick out of the shell. If it cant hatch itself it is not ment for this world. Its too sick or wasnt fully developed so thats why it didnt hatch. So chances are its not gonna live long. Or its gonna have extreme problems down the road. It wont get better either.

Well I helped two out... one is in pefect health - her problem was piping on the wrong side.

My other little one with the bum leg is doing rather well - I'll post pictures later.

I would think for a person who wants to breed chickens you'd want the strongest of the strong, and would be happy to weed out the weak who can't hatch or what ever... but for most who just want chickens as pets - a chicken with a bum leg is no different than any other... perhaps even sweeter.

Yup it wasnt fully developed. Theres really nothing you can do for it.

I can tell you - you're wrong..... give me a few minutes to post pictures.
