how can I get dirty leghorns clean?

I hope this is an appropriate section for this post...it's not a disease, just dirt

Check em out, they came from a very muddy and dirty place. They are pretty skiddish too. How can I get them clean? Will they eventually get clean themselves? The only white chicken I have had always was sparkling white.

i used regular dog flea and tick shampoo.. puppy shampoo that is easy on eyes.


I got two from around here and the last one died today. i hope you have better luck with yours! At least they had love in the last week or two of their lives

But they will look great after their bath..just do it on a warm day or blowdry them
 
I'm sorry, not really a suggestion, but I have 7 hens and NONE of them ever really get dirty, but my white leghorns, for whatever reason (and NOT just because they are white) are ALWAYS dirty!!! So good luck keeping them clean after the bath.

I just thought it was odd that I had a white cochin that would dust bathe and always look clean, suppose it was clean dirt?

I don't want to stress them out with a bath if they will just get filthy looking in a few days. to bathe or not to bathe..hmmm well, I bet my husband would get a good laugh at me anyways


I just had an idea...anyone ever use show sheen (you know..for horses)?

My dirtiest hen is my white silkie. I handle all of them regularly and she is just dirty. The others can shake the dust out of their feathers after their bath but not her. She dosn't seem to care......who knows. I'm not giving her a bath..... I did that with a guinea for medical reasons and that is the ONLY reason I will ever bathe a bird again. That was a trip......
 
I gave our cornish rock x's a bath in a bucket of water, no soap, just swished the water around them a bit; most didn't put up much of a fuss either. They were gross as we just couldn't keep them clean any longer in the brooder without changing the wood shavings every day and that was just too costly and time consuming. They have now been in the tractor for almost a week and look great!
