Hello Everyone,
No that's not a typo, there is a Santa Fe, TX. It's South of Houston near Galveston.
Here are my answers to the suggested questions:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am new to owning my own chickens but have worked with them at the Zoo for 8 years.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Will be starting my flock off with 3 hens I'm adopting from the Zoo but I plan on getting more.
(3) What breeds do you have? I'm not sure because they came from a hatchery in a mixed batch and they are not fully mature yet. I am also interested in Buff Orpingtons, Australops, Wyandottes, Barnevelders, Welsummers, Speckled Sussex, Ameraucanas... to name a few. I want a good mix in my coop.
My step daughter plans to raise broilers next year for 4H.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Doing a Google search to learn more about backyard chicken keeping.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Horses, camping, trail riding, reading, playing mountain dulcimer
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. My husband Richard and I have been married 2 & 1/2 years. His 12 yo step daughter lives with us full time. We have two dogs, a Blue Heeler and an awesome mixed breed, and a cat. Outside we have three horses and a heifer that SD raised for 4H last year. I work at a Zoo as a zookeeper, I enjoy it.
I'm sure I will have a lot of questions as I start this chicken adventure. The "Raising Chickens for Dummies" book has been a great help! We're starting to work on our coop, after finally settling on a design and hopefully within a few weeks I'll be bringing my girls home.
