VERY new to this but have done plenty of studying. Got some pictures of the quail chicks from today's hatch, namely because I have some surprises. I thought I ordered only tuxedo and jumbo browns.. This was proven wrong upon the hatching of two English Whites; they're the ones with the "freckle" on their head, right?

Aside from the Whites there is also one mystery colored chick. Right now I am assuming that it is a Red Tibetan (commonly accepted name?), but it could also be a Rosetta. I am sorry if the photoshopping makes this confusing, was just trying to really emphasize the one in particular. In the first picture, the chick with white/yellowish markings is the pharaoh/brown jumbo correct?

Here are the babies, but with emphasis on the mystery color:

So.. am I right? And how does this happen, yano, getting only tuxedos and brown, but ending up with some English Whites and Red Tibetan/Rosettas?

I can try and get pictures later, but is it common for tuxedos to look like they have chipmunking? One of mine looks as if it has black with white markings and right down the sides of its back are some dark-red fading-to-black markings..

Very interesting photo-shop work! Let me see here...The no brainier whites...Up, you have a white or 2, a brown, golden, a Tibetan or 2, a tux or 2. Just my best guess, and anything "Red" comes out in the wash.

Great color variety! Good luck with your little fuzzy butts!

No Red Tibetans...Either call it Tibetan or Rosetta or their one name British Range (Tibetans are known as dark ranges). You have some tuxedos in there. Looks like the person you bought the eggs from didn't know what they had or sent what they had at the time...the English whites/Texas A A and Ms are the yellow ones with the freckle on the head.

They look like Rosettas to me, too. I love how striking the Rosetta coloring is. It is my favorite color for coturnix, right next to white, golden, brown, regular Tibetan and all the other colors...

Most likely what happened is that the person had a pen of tuxedos. This should result in 25% of the chicks being tibetan (or rosetta), 25% of the chicks being white, and 50% of the chicks being tuxedo.

That is possible. I am at the conclusion that if you put together two tuxes, you get a double dose and then you get a double factor color (like the button quail--blue face for example).

But I house the Ranges in a pen together, regardless if they have more white or not...the more distinctive tuxedoes have their own pen, I added some whites in to emphasize them a bit more

That said, the Tuxedo gene is like the Andalusian Blue gene in chickens? Blue to blue produces 50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash.

In this case, assuming a quail is split (carries) the tuxedo genes: breeding a white to a Tibetan would result in 100% tuxedos?

Meant to post this earlier, does anyone out there know where there are good pictures of coturnix quail chicks of the Dark Range/Tibetan/Rosetta (which term is the most accepted for the color) and the Pharaoh/Brown?? Also, is there any difference in the Texas A&M White and English Whites?? From my understanding the A&M's are larger and true English Whites are difficult to find??

ONE LAST THING!! Swear, lol: where can I find more pictures of quail chicks?? I like to have images for comparison as I am just learning about these little guys. The sticky thread on this board about Coturnix Basics serves its purpose but is sorta limited..
