I'm wanting to add a few to my flock next spring to make my own sex-link chicks. Where do you recommend I buy them from?

I have White Rocks from Cackle Hatchery, they are good layers, mine just started laying about mid October so with winter here I get approximatley 12 eggs a week, with 6 hens. They do not have the best shelter yet, am trying to get that rectified tough.

Most everything I have gotten from Cackle and they all lay pretty good, like I said they are young and with winter here it is a natural slowdown. I expect more come spring. I would imagine that their Barred Rocks are also good layers.

Thanks for all the replies! So it sounds like Cackle is out. I really want hens that will produce well for two years or more. A couple friends of mine have BRs from Cackle and found they produced extremely well for the first year and then slowed way down for the second year.

I'm already planning to get some RIRs from McMurray and WRs from Mt. Healthy, so unless another hatchery has far better BRs I'd like to get them from one of these two hatcheries.

Enggass, how old are your BRs from Mt Healthy? I had to take a second look at your avatar photo, LOL. It's real cute!

RAREROO, Tadkerson replied back BTW and said "No- I have not seen ( do not remember) any research about chick color in white rocks. If you want to make sex linked crosses buy some delaware- they work great."

So I'll try some of Mt. Healthy's White Rocks and hope for the best!

I think Mt.Healthy has a 25 chick minimum.
I'm sure most hatcheries BR are pretty much the same.
My pullets are almost 8 months or 32 weeks to be exact. I got them May 5th.

Thanks Enggass! Mt. Healthy's minimum is 15 if you order all of one breed. If you order a "Create Your Own Mix" then the minimum's 25.

Has anyone else had Barred Rocks from Mt. Healthy or McMurray?

The reason I only have 2 is that I bought mine as 2 day olds from a local feed store. The told me all of their birds come from Mt Healthy in Ohio. I also got 3 RIRs that are great layers, but not true RIRs. The color is very production. Nice birds though!

Going forward I am going to hatch my own eggs from breeders... More of the rare breeds, dark egg layers and such.
