The counters on paraffin cutting machines really drive in how many cuts you've made, but I'd do 1000 paraffin sections over 200 cryostat sections! 14 micron thick sections with your hands in -20F for 3 hours sucks. Especially when your tisssue slices fall off during fixation and you have to do it all again!!!! Ugh, heaven forbid you used the last block and have to start new mice breedings to get more tissue. Plug check 9am daily and I smell like mouse urine all day.
I so understand no bands on a gel too.
Do have to say the outfits are hilarious, bio hazard bags, table top "potty pads", and her western outfit.
I swear all PI's say first author first year in their lab. What they really mean is 1st author the "first year" that you are "in" their lab "after" ALL coursework is done. In other words. year 3....

I can relate to almost every scene, including the what's in the box, what's that smell, and especially bad project.... we have insane mice that do flips too.
Seems like they have a whole ton more fun in their lab though, and I thought I had a ton of sticky notes.

I've never been a grad student, but I've been an employee in the labs that the grad students pass through. The costuming in particular amused me; I don't know if I'd dress in those pads.
I worked in a lab, about a billion years ago, with MD, PhDs coming through...I think any PhD student finishing their projects would have had a starring role in this video. It did take me back, especially the microtomes and trying to decipher someone's foreign language notes. My personal bad memory is hacking bone off mounted specimens so I could section them, and then making the last cut and knocking off the pinhead sized piece of bone-free tissue that looks exactly like every other piece of plastic I just spent an hour or two trimming off; finally finding it, and remounting it upside down.
The other one was dealing with guys that were foreign research fellows with different lab standards in the countries they came from...."you have to keep the osmium tetroxide in the hood, and use gloves" "but in my country, we....."
They also forgot the lunches stored in the lab fridge.
If I ever end up with a funny sort of cancer, I'm blaming the research fellows.

Phenol IS dangerous and WILL cause bad chemical burns.. ie. it is not in soap...
SDS powder should NOT be opened or poured outside the hood.
And PFA should not be boiled in the lab on the bench.
My favorite is a note on the door asking for more paper towels.
It said " Please bring more paper towers". It's hilarious if you know their accent.

I think the group that did this was perfect! The outfits were hilarious!! My favorite was the biohazard bag bow in her hair and the fingerless nitrile gloves! The backup dancers were hilarious, too!
I've watched it probably a dozen times already - I see something new every time! They did such a good job with it - very intelligently done. So many of my friends (in labs) think that she was talking about their life... it's amazing how all research labs are just about the same.

I liked the part where being a parole officer in Fergus Falls, MN was better than being in the lab.
