So I was out of state for a couple weeks and just returned on Monday. While I was gone my boyfriend's mom was taking care of our chickens for us and she sent me a text message saying, "oh, by the way...one of your little girls is a guy" and of course I'm like, "no..they all lay eggs so they're all girls" but she replies with, "well we heard a little rooster-like crow that sounded close and I think it's one of your little girls". Just for the sake of convincing her that my Old English bantams are hens, I sent her pictures of Old English roosters. Argument over.
Well sure enough I was out feeding not too long ago and while I was in the building taking care of our younger chicks, I hear a "rooster-like crow".
I walk outside to see where it was coming from and all three of my "big" hens were just standing there looking at me. Nothing abnormal. As I walk up to the house, I stop before I get to the back porch and look back out there and of course, one of my little bantam hens is out there stretching her little neck out and it looks like she's trying to "crow" again. So of course I'm trying to figure out why my hen is trying to now be a rooster. She's over a year old and has been laying eggs. She's never been around a rooster until not too long before I went out of state, when I borrowed a bantam rooster from my grandma to try to help with an aggression issue with our other bantam hen. He only stayed for about a week before I took him back because I live in a neighborhood and he thought crowing at 4am was a good idea.
Anyways, now my little "big" (because I have little "little" girls too) girl thinks she's a rooster. Any explanations?
