So, I got a call from someone I know and they ask if I want some more chickens. I say sure, how many? They say I dont know, its the nieghbor, he wants rid of some, maybe a dozen? Ok fine. He says the neighbor will drop them off, I can bring the cages back later.

I went to get them and there were THREE DOZEN birds stuffed into two smallish dog cages! Like the kind you'd keep a beagle in! These arent chicks either. They are some young, but mostly adults, no BIG birds, but large banty to standard sizes. I have no idea what kind, probably all mutts. They were so crowded and so unhappy and one of them had it's toe squashed between the crate and the side of the crate pan. There's blood in my car and in the cage. I dont know if that's the only one that got hurt, I dont even know which bird had the toe hurt I couldn't tell who the toe belonged to, just was focused on getting it freed.

I wasnt really planning on this many yet, but I was kind of stuck with it. That's okay, we will make room, but wow. I cant even tell how many roos and hens I have. I think it's about 50/50. I guess I will go sort them tomorrow and check them over. I didnt want to traumatize them any further today.

I haven't told hubby yet and am hoping they keep quiet so he doesnt wander out to the barn. His birthday ducks are in there and I dont want him to see them yet!

I'll post pics later, cant upload them till he heads to bed!

Poor little things, I know they will be better off with you than where they were. Bless you for taking all of them.

OH MY! Chicken math at its finest!

Glad you could take them in. Sad that so many were in such a tight space.
Quarantine for a month if possible lol. WOW 36 OH MY.

The other person said they were surprised he crammed them like that, that he's always taken good care of his birds. That makes he hopeful that they arent cootie infested. I can keep them separate, but only in the other room of the barn, and thats not exactly airtight, so I will kind of have to hope for the best.
With 18 roos, some are destined for the stew pot or dog food, but they will be treated kindly until then. After sorting tomorrow, Any injured or otherwise problematic roos may be dispatched. After that, I will determine my favorites and go from there. Time will tell if there are any mean ones, those will go.
Hens will stay unless there is someone that is really not doing well. He did say there are some older ones but he has kept them b/c they are good setters.
We were planning to get some to lay and eat anyway, but werent quite ready for this! Oh well, I havent gotten a job in the new town yet...

LOL! You sound like me. I went on Craigslist hoping to get 4 laying hens as cheaply as possible - instead I ended up with 16 hens and 6 roosters, all for free!

Keeping an eye on everybody for a while sounds like a good idea. With mine, I found that some weren't laying at all, and some were egg-eaters. I now have 6 left that I'm very happy with.

Hubby went to bed, let the downloads begin! I'll post a couple group pics here, and I'm also going to post some in the ID section, would love input on breeds and sexes!
