Maizie's Life
Chapter One
Butter Scotch, a Buff Orpington, one of Maizie's best friends died. She died from the cold. It rained and stormed. Everyone was very unhappy. The flock watched as the young girl who went by the name "Sarah" and the man who went by the name "John" burried Butter. Maize had now learned the English language, so she could understand almost every word Sarah and John had said. Sarah had worked with her. Sarah could understand Maizie's cocking movements. She almost knew what Maizie had tried to say. Life seemed like it was getting better for Maize, besides for the death of her friend. Maize had deep thoughts as she had watched her dead friend, lay movelessly, next to the hole being made. Maizie didn't understand how no one else had died, from the terrible cold. Perhaps just the breed?
After a long sad hour, Sarah picked up Maizie's friend and set her in a cardboard box, that was filled with grass and pine needles. She put a lovely flower on top of her, then call the flock over. They all ran to the box and looked in. Maizie's eyes sagged, when she got up close to the sight of the lifeless body. Lacey, a Laced Wyandotte, Maizie's friend, looked down at the body, standing right next to Maizie. Sarah pushed us away, then took one last look, before closing the box. She slid a letter to God into the box, then taped it closed. That was it. The flock would never see their old friend again.
Sarah put the box into the hole, that her father, John, had dug. He shoveled the dirt back on top of the box, and pat it down. He and Sarah walked into the human house, while the flock walked into the coop. Lacey and Mazie sat in the pine shavings, quite disturbed with what just happened that day. Maizie's heart sank as she thought of the loss of her beloved friend. After a while of thinking about what just happened, she slowly dozed off.
