Well, our chicken coop is almost complete! It just needs a few finishing touches to make it home for the girls. We live on a heavily wooded 8 acre piece of land with lots of critters so we decided to convert a previously used dog kennel into our chicken coop and run. It is divided into three sections of kennels but we used the largest section which is approximately 12 x 12 and 6 ft tall. It has cement flooring and is enclosed by chain link fence all around and over the top. I plan to wrap chicken wire along the bottom of the run as a precaution.

Here is our coop - we made it from lots of recycled things - the window from a garage sale, door was free off craigslist, nests were old kitchen cabinets we found from the previous homeowners, and the white perches in front of the nests were from a garage sale as well. The roof is green treated plywood with recycled tin roofing on it and 2 screened air vents which you can't see in the pics. I still have to add the roosts, wood shavings, and paint the exterior but this was by brother-in-laws first coop building experience and I have to say, I think it turned out quite well! Thanks for looking!

That looks awesome.

Are you going to be putting down some sort of bedding for them? I hear that concrete floors are not good for their feet and was wondering about that.

Yes, I will probably use wood shavings. I just haven't done it yet. :lol:We also have a lot of hay and straw around because of our livestock so I may use that for the nests. We'll see!

I love how you used recycled stuff for nest boxes and the nest box perches!!!

How about roosts?? Will they be higher than the next boxes so the hens don't roost in the nests?

Great job!

Great job!! Its funny how if we look hard enough, we can really find good stuff to use for cheap!! I love the old kitchen cabinet idea, we used old dresser drawers (modified) and old lumber from other projects. We also used lumber (free) from construction sites that they were throwing out.

I think your idea is awsome!! And I can't wait to see it painted...please keep us up on the progress!!
